In 1860 the Atchison & Topeka Railway Company was
orgainized. In 1963 the name was change to
Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. To help
get the company started, Congress authorized
AT&SF to purchase unalloted lands of
Pottawatomie Indian Reservation near Topeka
for $1.00 an acre, resell it to farmers with
the profits to be used to provide capital
for construction. It was in 1875 AT&SF was the
first to use refrigerated equipped cars to
haul meat. But it was not until 1930 that the
first air-conditioned diner car entered service.
For several years the Santa Fe was the longest
railroad in the U.S., with 13,568 miles of
track. The artwork of the Santa Fe passenger train is
placed in a 17 inch by 17 1/4 inch hardwood
frame. Matted in three colors, it contains
a Santa Fe emblem and a three cent United
States postage stamp honoring railroad
engineers of America (50 year old stamp) and a commemorative envelope depicting the Santa Fe Chief.
