Teacher

DID YOU KNOW? Oldtimers remember when emphasis was placed on knowing the "3 R's" of education - Reading, Riting and Rithmetic. It is obvisous spelling was not emphasized. The importance of education was realized as early as 1635, with the founding of the Boston Latin School. In 1642 the Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law requiring parents to teach their children to read. The first public school was established in Massachusetts in 1647. By 1918 every state in America had a compulsory school-attendance law. The solid oak frame, measuring 17 x 17 1/2 inches, surrounds a school teacher appreciation art collage. The picture calls to mind the old one-room school house. The postal service issued a public education stamp October 1, 1985. The First Day Cover (envelope) and stamp are 15 years old. Last, but not least, a pewter "#1 teacher" collectible (whimwham) is made a focal point of the picture.
