USS Balao Class SubmarineDID YOU KNOW?
The Gato Class of submarines were produced
at the beginning of World War II. Of the 72
built, all were 312 feet long and 27 feet
wide and powered by 4 diesel engines and 4
electric motors which provided a speed of around
21 miles per hour on the surface and 9 miles per hour submerged.
The crew numbered from 65 to 70. While it was
rated to descend to a depth of 300 feet,
many successfully went as deep as 450 feet.
By late 1943 the Gato Class was replaced by
the Balao Class. They were practically
identical except for a thicker hull and use
of stronger steel which increased the rated
depth another 100 feet. There were 120 submarines
of the Balao Class built. This 19 inch by 15 1/2 inch solid hardwood
framed picture with 3 colored mats, consists of
a submarine patch (USS Hammerhead-Sub#SS-364
and a gold tone submarine emblem. Pictured on
the maxicard is a World War II submarine
(Gato Class) along with a picture of the
USS Hammerhead patch. There are 3 submarine
postage stamps also included in this picture.
