P-47 Thunderbolt Airplane

DID YOU KNOW? Plane designers believed lightweight aircraft would make the best fighter interceptors. The P-47 proved that was not necessarily true. Nicknamed the "Thunderbolt" it became the heaviest single-engine, single-seat fighter of World War II, weighing nearly 6 tons at take off. It's major role was flying escort for bomber formations. More P-47s were built than any other American fighter. This 17 1/2 inch by 15 1/2 inch hardwood framed picture consists of an Air Force patch, Air Force wings, three World War II Army Air Corps official postage stamps (three cent stamp is 55 years odl) and a maxicard picturing a P-47 Thunderbolt.
