The P-47 proved that was not necessarily true.
Nicknamed the "Thunderbolt" it became the
heaviest single-engine, single-seat fighter of
World War II, weighing nearly 6 tons at take
off. It's major role was flying escort for
bomber formations. More P-47s were built than
any other American fighter. This 17 1/2 inch by 15 1/2 inch hardwood framed
