The P-51 Mustang was designed and a prototype
tested in an amazing 117 days. It turned out
to be considered the finest fighter plane of
WWII and was credited with destroying more
enemy aircraft than any other American fighter.
As a long-range escort fighter, it earned the nickname
of "Little Friend" from bomber crews that
would otherwise be easy prey for attacking
German fighters. The P-51, at 440 mph, was
the fastest American plane flying in WWII.
