Marathon Oil Company

DID YOU KNOW? Before 1920 people asked for gasolene. The following year it became known as gasoline. It is a mystery as to why there was a change in spelling. From the inception of the gas pump, at least 62 American Companies entered the business. Three of the largest makers in the early years were Bowser, Toklein and Wayne, all located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. From about 1912 to the mid 1950's gas pumps were crowned by illuminated globes which identified the brand. These globes varied with over 4,000 different kinds being manufactured. Framed in hardwood the picture measures 16 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches. Three different mat colors add to the picture's appearance. Included in this picture is an art print of a Marathon station, a Marathon patch and a special issue envelope commemorating the 140th anniversary of the petroleum industry and 4 cent petroleum industry stamp which are 41 years old (August 27, 1959).
