Skelly Oil CompanyDID YOU KNOW?
Both oil and gas were discovered in Western
Virginia by the first explorers in mid-1700's.
George Washington acquired 250 acres in what
is now West Virginia because it contained
an oil spring. This was in 1771, making the
father of our country the first petroleum
industry speculator. A thriving commercial
oil industry was in process as early as
1819. There was enough oil seeping from the
ground to make the venture profitable. In 1855,
a man named Edwin Drake put oil exploration
in high gear. For the first time, he had
successfully reached oil by drilling a hole in
the ground in Titusville, PA. Just 4 years later (1859) successful
oil wells had been drilled near Parkersburg,
West Virginia. By 1860, oil was selling for
$30 a barrel. That was big money in 1860.
