Humble Oil Company

DID YOU KNOW? The Edwin Drake well is better known by historians than the Anthony Lucas well. Drake was the first to use a drilling rig to reach oil. Lucas was the first to reach a "gusher" while drilling for oil. This event took place on a small knoll south of Beaumont, Texas, at a place called Spindletop. It was January 10, 1901, when Lucas hit oil after drilling 1,000 feet. A geyser of oil gushed 200 feet into the air. It was estimated the well was flowing over 3,000,000 gallons of oil a day (80,000 barrels). Before Spindletop, a big producing oil well flowed 50 barrels per day. The Lucas well produced 1,600 times that amount. Spindletop marks the beginning of the modern petroleum industry. Framed in hardwood the picture measures 16 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches. Three different mat colors add to the picture's appearance. Included in this picture is an art print of a Humble station, a Humble patch, a Commerative Cover and a 4 cent petroleum industry stamp issued August 27, 1959.
