GolfDID YOU KNOW? The game of golf can be traced back to around
1400 AD in Scotland. Recognized the world
over as the "Home of Golf," St Andrews Link
has borne witness to 600 years of golfing
history. From a simple track hacked through
bushes and heather, the Links has evolved into
the largest golfing complex in Europe. Featuring
6 golf courses, it attracts hundreds of
thousands of golfing pilgrims from around the
globe each year. Golf became too popular in the
middle ages, and was banned in Scotland in 1457 by
King James II. He felt it was distracting
young men from archery practice. This ban was
repeated by succeeding monarchs until James IV
cancelled the ban and took up golfing himself
in 1502. The solid oak frame measures
16 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches and the picutre is
matted in three colors. The art work is the
11th hole of the Augusta Golf Course. Also
included is a symbolic golf pewter casting.
The first day cover envelope and stamp were
issued by the postal service to honor Bobby
Jones. Both stamp and envelope are 19 years
old.
